Cafe 939 was a blast...

From the opening notes of the J. Geils Band's "First I Look at the Purse", to the closing chord of The Rolling Stones' "Get Off of My Cloud", SIX tore through a 2 hour set on October 20th at Boston's Cafe 939, to the delight of a handful of their most diehard fans. It was a mix of old and new SIX tunes as the band included such standards as Van Morrisson's "Brown Eyed Girl", The Doors' "Love Me Two Times", and Tom Petty's "Breakdown" (turns out that the 20th was also Tom's birthday, but bassist John Swartz used it once again near the close of the set to introduce the band), along with a host of new songs. Some of those new songs included the Santanna/Rob Thomas collaboration "Smooth" (vocals by keyboardist Steve Bratt, and featuring some added latin percussion by both vocalist Stephen Cole and guitarist Bruce Lauterwasser), Sam & Dave's (later covered by the Fabulous Thunderbirds) "Wrap It Up" (sung by guitarist Walter Ogier) and Golden Earring's classic "Radar Love". Drummer Scott Gilmour even got in on lead vocal duties, on the band's only 21st Century cover, "Gasoline and Matches" (by Buddy and Julie Miller). A few songs that haven't been performed by SIX in awhile were brought back (The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and "Eight Days a Week", and Richie Valens hit, "La Bamba"). A rocking good time was had by all, and everyone got home before the stroke of midnight (it was a school night after all...).
